FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – on April 4th the University Libraries and Fulbright college are sponsoring the ringing of Old Main’s bells. This will be the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death and will be ringing the bells 39 times in remembrance of his 39 years of life.
On the same day there will be a day long event at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The Motel is known as the last place that King stood and the event will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The University Libraries Special Collections department holds onto several collections of the Civil Rights Movement including the digital collection, “Land of (Unequal) Opportunity Documenting the Civil Rights Struggle in Arkansas.” These collections offer a number of photographs of the Civil Rights Movement related to Martin Luther King.
The community is invited to gather at the Fulbright Peace Fountain at 6 p.m. before the bells go off to honor King.
