University of Arkansas students in the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing spent the morning of Dec. 2 at Lifesource International in Fayetteville, providing blood pressure screenings and information about nutrition to clients of the nonprofit organization. Lifesource provides food, clothing, counseling, children’s programing, educational services and other assistance.
The students in clinical instructor Janet Gardner’s community health class said the experience helped them understand the importance of providing health information to people in settings outside traditional medical facilities.
“It gave them an opportunity to work with a different population than they normally see,” Gardner said. “It also helps them understand what resources are available in the community for people who need help.”
Tori Edington, one of the group of seniors, said the work the students did at Lifesource was an example of how to help people prevent health problems from developing.
Students with Edington were Kayla Mendoza, Nicole Bolt, Melisa Swearingen, Mini Liebenberg, Juan Garcia and Kelsey Jenkins. They all will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree on Dec. 19.
