Scooter Theft is Rising on Campus

Scooter theft increased in recent months according to UAPD’s Corporal Gabriel Golden.

“This year, from this calendar year, so far we are up to 31 reports of stolen scooters.”

There are a few things students could do to discourage thieves from targeting their scooters.

“Whenever you are parked using the installed handlebar lock is pretty easy, on most of them you turn the handlebar to one direction you turn the key a little more than normal and now you’ve locked your handle bars so they can’t be turned. Also get a cable lock or a chain lock and running them through one of the tires can be a deterrent as well, because without taking it off they can’t go very far.”

Andrew Smith, a junior at the university had his scooter stolen also has tips for students.

“Just get a cheap bike lock, they are more likely to steal someone’s without a lock rather than someone who does, less hassle for them.”

UAPD said that certain lots have been targeted more than others.

“For the most part, most are coming from lot 73A which is right across from the football facility, and next would be lot 56.”
