A $3 million donation from the Walmart Foundation is aimed at providing fresher strawberries for customers and an economic boost for local farmers. The donation was made to the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. U of A horticulture professor Curt Rom says strawberries travel an average distance up to or exceeding 3,000 miles from farm to market, and this donation will help to expand where strawberries can be grown and allow shorter trips for the berries between the farm and consumer.
