Governor Mike Beebe is trying to reduce the state sales tax on groceries and increase funding for state funded programs.
The proposed tax decrease would take effect July first and would reduce the grocery tax by one-and-a-half cents.
This new proposal would eliminate the tax except for the part that can only be changed by an amendment to the state constitution.
In Beebe’s 4-poiont-9-billion-dollar budget proposal, overall spending would increase by over 4-percent.
The state medicaid budget, public schools, and the state’s Rainy Day Fund would all see increases in funding from the state.
