Ark- The first West Nile Virus related death in Arkansas has been confirmed by the Arkansas Department of health. So far, 1,118 cases of the virus have been reported nationwide with 15 of those being in Arkansas, with national death totals reaching 41, making this the largest West Nile breakout in US history.
There is a way to protect you and your family from catching the mosquito-spread virus though. The health department recommends that you:
* Drain standting water from your yard.
* Avoid going outside during dusk and dawn, when mosquitos are most active.
* Use insect repellents with the active ingredient DEET when you go outdoors.
Common symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, or rash. Anyone who has symptoms that cause concern should contact their health care provider.
