Pedestrian Safety at the University of Arkansas

Pedestrian safety around the University of Arkansas’ campus is becoming a greater concern for city and university officials.  With increasing enrollment at the university, streets and crosswalks are becoming overcrowded and often dangerous.

New changes in traffic laws, such as the addition of a 4-Way stop at the intersection of Maple St. and Razorback Rd. in June  2012, are intended to help control automotive traffic as well as provide safe crossing for pedestrians . The addition of crosswalks around the University of Arkansas’ campus and the rest of Fayetteville are intended to keep motorists aware and conscious of pedestrians.

The number of fatal pedestrian accidents in Fayetteville has decreased in recent years, down from three in 2009 to two in 2011. Some students are annoyed by the increased number of crosswalks and stop signs on campus, however officials hope the changes will keep students and residents safer for years to come.
