Taking Nothing Less with T. Jay

by Bernard Oliver

No it’s not Banging in the Rock 2, but it definitely packs just as much impact. Positive impact. My sit down with native Arkansan T. Jay proved to be a great experience as he walked through his budding career and future plans.

Who is T. Jay? Well his name is Terry Johnson he’s a rapper, poet, producer & entrepreneur from Little Rock “and I’m always, constantly evolving” Johnson adds. The man behind the microphone and out of his rap persona’s comfort zone isn’t much different than his tracks would lead you to believe. From the politically and religiously charged track True Religion to the self empowering Resurrection Johnson said he “just tries to be real” when asked about his music, and aim with his upcoming album Nothin’ Less.

When he’s not doing one of the three professions mentioned above you can most likely catch him hosting the Concrete Schoolyard, an underground hip-hop show on the student ran radio station KXUA 88.3. “I don’t get a whole lot of sleep; I’m always either at work or in the studio making moves.”

Recently one of those moves was being made as Johnson slept off a case of the sniffles. MTV’s Rap Fix Live played the video for his single Breakfast and Biggie. Rap Fix Live is hosted by the legendary reporter and television personality Sway Calloway, if anyone was to break Johnson into the public eye he’s the man to do it. From now on “everything is from this level and up basically I’m Taking Nothin’ Less” Johnson said with a giddy laugh.

Johnson is currently working on a video series which will lead up to the release of his next project appropriately titled, Taking Nothin’ Less. Johnson described Taking Nothin’ Less as revolutionary. “It will take you, the fan, through what I go through as I complete my first major album” Johnson went on to add.
