The University of Arkansas exceeded all expectations when it brought in more than $86.7 million from private benefactors this year. There were more than 12,000 new donors which resulted in a 17 percent increase in funds to the University. The majority of the money will go to Student Support programs such as renovated buildings, new technology, and student or faculty led research. Danielle Strickland, the Manager of Advancement Communications, said the money is already being seen put to use in Vol Walker Hall renovations.
Tragedy struck at Wal-mart last Friday when a young girl was raped. Brandon Hutson, 22, was charged for kidnapping and raping a three year old girl. Hutson was seen on camera at a Fayetteville Wal-Mart taking the young girl. After the girl told her mother what had happened, a message went out to other stores. Hutson was found at a Springdale Wal-mart trying to lure another girl into the bathroom. He claimed that the incident was an accident. He has a bond set at $250,000.
In Mexico, police officers who failed a test are being cut from the staff. Almost 3,200 police officers in Mexico were fired after substandard performance in screening tests and charges of corruption. The officers cut represented close to 10 percent of the entire police force. Police Officials say the lay-offs were aimed to stop corruption, especially in the area of drug cartels. The new public safety database called Platform Mexico would also make it easier to follow officers involved in the drug trade.
The girls Volleyball team started it’s season with a swift Bump, Set, Spike as it won the Arkansas Invitational with little trouble. The girls went 3-0 for the weekend for the first time since 2006. Junior Kelli Stipanovich at above a 53 percent hitting percentage, and was put on the All-Tournament team with two other teammates.
