Oaklawn Feels The Cold

Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs has canceled the final six races of the 10-race schedule program Monday because of track conditions — due to the cold.  The decision was was between management and riders. Strong winds, moisture on the track, cloudy skies, and cold temperatures are what has caused the track to freeze.

Five Found Safe In National Forest

Officials say an adult and four teenagers who spent almost 12 hours lost in a national forest have been safely found.  Franklin County Emergency Management coordinator Fred Mullin said rescue crews were called about 8:30 p.m. Sunday to search for the group who left Byrds Campground around 4 p.m. riding dirtbikes.  The rescue team say the group ran out of gas and got lost about 8 miles away in the Ozark National Forest.

Local Man Convicted of First Degree Battery

A local man has been convicted of first degree battery after beating his daughter’s boyfriend.  The question was whether or not David Reed intended to harm Austin Guzman when he fired four shots at Guzman through a closet door.  Guzman was visting Reed’s daughter, his girlfriend at her house.

National:

American Missionaries Held in Haiti

A decision on whether bail would be granted for 10 Americans missionaries held in Haiti has been delayed due to quake related electrical problems at the courthouse.  Prosecutors were unable to print out their recommendation for the judge to review.  A decision is expected on Wednesday.  The Americans are facing charges of kidnapping and criminal association for trying to take 33 children out of Haiti.

Church Shooting Suspects

Police  believe they have identified two of the three men in a Sunday church service shooting in Richmond, California. The shooting left two teenagers injured.  The names of the suspected gunman are not being released, but police did say the men are in their late teens or early 20s.

Taliban Commander Capture

Obama administration officials are  calling the capture of Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar the most significant since September 11, 2001.  The arrest comes as some 15,000 Afghan and NATO forces are battling the Taliban in the Marjah area of southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province, an offensive called Operation Moshtarak. Baradar is considered the number two man in the Taliban.

Bye Bye Bayh

Indiana Senator Evan Bayh is calling it quits in Congress.  He stunned the political world with his announcement yesterday and now he says that he can achieve much more in the private sector than as a senator.  Bayh blames the the gridlock in Congress on partisanship.

2010 Arkansas baseball games to air on KQSM 92.1 FM

Razorback Sports Properties and University of Arkansas Athletic Department have announced KQSM 92.1 FM The Ticket will carry all Razorback baseball games during the 2010 season on the Razorback Sports Network from ISP. Last season, KQSM 92.1 FM carried Razorback games during the College World Series. In Benton County, KURM 790 AM and sister station KURM 100.3 FM will also carry games.

Top 10 Ranking for Arkansas Track and Field

In this week’s version of the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association poll, the Arkansas Razorback men’s and women’s track and field teams both garnered top-10 rankings, it was announced on Monday.  The Arkansas women, seated at No. 5 this week, moved up six spots from last week’s No. 11 position. Arkansas is one of five Southeastern Conference women’s teams in the top 25. The Florida Gators are No. 3, the Tennessee Lady Vols are No. 5, the LSU Tigers are No. 7 and the Auburn Tigers are No. 8.  The Razorbacks currently hold three NCAA automatic qualifiers in senior Katie Stripling and sophomore Tina Sutej (pole vault) and the 4×400-meter relay (junior Edina Brooks, junior Shelise Williams, sophomore Whitney Jones and freshman Regina George).  Arkansas has NCAA provisional qualifiers in Williams and George in the 400 meters, freshman Stephanie Brown and sophomore Kristen Gillespie in the 800 meters and the mile, the distance medley relay (sophomore Samantha Learch, Williams, George and Gillespie) and senior Janice Keppler in the pole vault.  In the last two competitions, the squad has set school records in the distance medley relay, the 4×400-meter relay and Williams in the open 400 meters.
