Okay, it’s getting late in the day. And yet it is still snowing here in Northwest Arkansas. Why would you want to go out in that? Are you crazy? Stay inside, be lazy. Plug in your video playing machine and keep warm. This post is part 2 of 2 of UATV’s Top Ten Snow Day Movies. Just to recap, numbers 10 through 6 were:
10. Out Cold (2001), Directed by Brendan and Emmett Malloy
9. Die Hard 2 (1990), Directed by Renny Harlin
8. The Ice Harvest (2005), Directed by Harold Ramis
7. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), Directed by John Hughes
6. Dumb and Dumber (1994), Directed by The Farrelly Brothers
Wow. What a great list. I had to write this in two parts just so I could view a few samples from the first half. Although, it did give me time to think of how odd of a list this is. Why did I make of lists of snow-themed movies? If you wanted to watch snow, you would position your couch in front of the window. This should have been a list of films with tropical locations. Nevertheless, the next five motion pictures are quite good, and since there ranked, the next five should be better. The top 5 best snow day movies are…
5. The Lookout (2007)
Directed by Scott Frank
In Dumb and Dumber, Jeff Daniels took part making in fun of the blind. In The Lookout, Jeff Daniels plays a blind character. How ironic. This 2007 film is quirky crime/thriller that also features 500 Days of Summer star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. JGL plays a young man with no long-term memory. The characters get caught up in a bank heist, and action ensues. If you are not a nerdy-movie-type, you may not have heard about this film, but it is well worth putting in your Netflix queue.
4. Groundhog Day (1993)
Directed by Harold Ramis
Okay, I know Harold Ramis has two movies on this list. I swear its not a crush. Although, I do have affection for some of his films. Groundhog Day has a similar plot with The Ice Harvest. No, there’s no mobsters or Billy Bob Thorton involved, but it does have a man who can’t leave a city due to inclement weather. The protagonist wakes up again and again, having to relive the same day over and over. It is the closest thing you can get to being married to Bill Murray. Yes, I do have a crush on Bill Murray. I’m not ashamed of it. He makes terrific movies.
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Directed by Michel Gondry
The plot of this movies is pretty difficult to describe. It involves mind-erasing machines, characters wandering through their subconscious memories and Kirsten Dunst dancing on a sleeping man. Don’t worry. You will be able to understand this movie, but I warn you. This is not a movie for those of you who are single and lonely. I know that may seem mean, but you’ll thank me later.
2. The Shining (1980)
Directed by Stanley Kubrick
The Shining is a movie that you should watch by yourself, because Jack Nicholson’s performance is so hysterical that if you were stuck indoors with your family and watched this movie there would be a small possibility you would go insane. This Stanley Kubrick classic is not a film to be taken lightly, but of course, you probably knew that once you read “Directed by Stanley Kubrick.” That guy doesn’t do normal. Did I mention it is based on a book by Stephen King?
And finally…
1. The Mighty Ducks (1992)
Directed by Stephen Herek
That’s right, The Mighty Ducks is the number one movie to watch on a snow day. I’m not going to apologize for it either. Sure, this film has an 8% by Rotten Tomatoes, but this motion picture sparked one of the greatest sports movie franchises of the 1990s. This film made millions of children believe they liked hockey. The Mighty Ducks is the origins of the “knucklepuck”, the Bash Brothers and a third movie that doesn’t really feature Emilio Estevez but gives him top billing anyway. If you think you didn’t have a childhood, then you just need to acquire a copy of this film immediately. The preferred method is a VHS cassette in a large plastic case. Find one.
